When the COVID-19 outbreak became classified as a pandemic, I began to read an increasing number of stories about maker communities and individuals involved in the maker movement who were stepping up and helping make and donate PPE to medical facilities. Since I have been an active member of the maker movement and had many of the resources necessary to make the PPE, I began to produce face shields. I chose to make face shields as they were the simplest form of PPE I could make with the materials and tools I had on hand – 3D printing, office plastic sheets, and rubber bands.
Since many large hospitals and other large medical facilities were receiving the majority of the available PPE, I thought it was important to donate the face shields I fabricated to smaller community doctors’ offices and clinics, who might not have access to PPE.
